Caretaker PM Anwarul Haq Kakar visits Government School Projects developed under Tech Fellow project
During his visit to Gilgit, the Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar inspected the innovative projects prepared by students of the Government School under the Tech Fellow project, implemented by Rupani Foundation.
He expressed keen interest in the students' paintings, educational, scientific, and energy-related projects. He also appreciated the dedication of the teachers who serve as role models for the children and recognized the talents of the students, encouraging them.
In appreciation of a student's scientific model, he directed that she be given a certificate of appreciation. The caretaker prime minister also engaged the students with questions about the effects of climate change, remarking that our children have the full potential to excel in the field of science -

Rupani Foundation conducts policy dialogue with Parliamentarians and other relevant stakeholders on mental health issues and suicides in Gilgit-Baltistan.
The session, held at Old Assembly Building in Gilgit, was attended by Deputy Speaker Nazir Ahmed Advocate, Senior Minister Col (r) Abbaidullah Baig, Finance Minister Javaid Ali Manwa, Parliamentary Secretary Health Kulsoom Farman, Parliamentary Secretary Tourism Dilshad Bano, Parliamentary Secretary Education Surya Zaman, officials of different relevant government departments, community activists and representatives of civil society organisations.
Renowned US-based Pakistani Psychiatrist Dr Mazhar Khowaja shared his survey findings and recommendations to address the issue. -
Rupani Foundation hosts first-ever Prenatal Conference 2022 in Gilgit-Baltistan
Rupani Foundation organized the first-ever Prenatal Conference in Gilgit-Baltistan at the Musharraf Hall of Karakoram International University to initiate discussion and create awareness about the issues and solutions related to the prenatal phase of life.
The conference was organized in collaboration with the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan, Karakoram International University and Pakistan Alliance for Early Childhood.
More than 300 pregnant women, health professionals and other relevant stakeholders participated in the conference.
Deputy Speaker Nazir Ahmed Advocate was chief guest of the conference whereas Parliamentary Secretary Health Kulsoom Farman, Parliamentary Secretary Tourism Dilshad Bano and Parliamentary Secretary Education Suraya Zaman also participated in the event.
The speakers presented research papers, scientific knowledge and discussed the existing situation, challenges and way forward, in order to improve the prenatal outcomes in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Addressing the conference, Chairman Rupani Foundation Nasruddin Rupani said that the prenatal phase directly affects the quality of life of the pregnant women and is also the most important determinant for both maternal and infant health and wellbeing for the rest of their lives. He said woman’s positive experiences during this critical phase of life lays the foundations for healthy motherhood and shapes a thriving human family, and a prosperous community and a better society. Many pregnant women experience mental issues which not only affects the mother’s well-being but may also have significant effects on pregnancy outcomes, he added.
Deputy Speaker Nazir Ahmed Advocate, while appreciating the role of Rupani Foundation, stressed on the need to promote a healthy lifestyle, including good nutrition, detecting and preventing diseases, providing family counselling and addressing mental health issues.
He said the need is to also join hands to strengthen health systems, train health workers, improve the availability of essential health services and promote maternal and infant health standards in order to improve the pregnancy outcomes.
Famous pediatrician Major General (r) Dr. Salman Ali, renowned US-based Pakistani Psychiatrist Dr. Mazhar Khowaja, Gynecologist Dr. Neelam Jahan, Dr. Naeem Zafar, Dr Tazeen Saeed Ali. Associate Dean Aga Khan University, Dr. Sadiq Assistant Professor KIU, Dr. Hafeez Population Welfare Department presented research papers and technical presentations on various aspects of prenatal phase.
Experts said that pregnant women have health issues in Gilgit-Baltistan due to lack of health facilities in remote areas. They said that pregnant women suffer from various gender-based discriminations that have negative impact on the health of both mothers and children.
Renowned US-based Pakistani Psychiatrist Dr. Mazhar Khowaja delivered his presentation on importance of mental health during Prenatal Phase, key challenges and its remedial.
Senior Pediatrician Maj. General (r) Dr. Salman Ali discussed deformities and other health issues of children caused by prenatal factors.
Gynecologist Dr. Neelum Jehan shared her experience on maternal health issues and complications during pregnancy in the context of Gilgit-Baltistan.
Dr. Naeem Zafar delivered his presentation on importance of early stimulation during prenatal period and guidelines of CRC on child protection.
Dr. Hafizullah discussed prenatal health care and demographic situation in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Dr. Tazeen Saeed Ali presented her findings on effects of GBV in the prenatal phase on mother and fetus health.
Dr. Sadiq discussed the findings of his research on Peripartum mental illness in the context of Gilgit-Baltistan.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), target is to reduce the country’s maternal mortality ratio (MMR) to less than 140 per 100,000 live births by 2030. According to Maternal Mortality Survey 2019, MMR in Gilgit-Baltistan is 157 deaths/100,000 live births as compared to the national average of 186. World Health Organization recommends minimum of four prenatal check-ups. However, according to the Gilgit-Baltistan Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey 2016-17 only 27.9 percent in GB have received Prenatal Care at least four times by any health service provider.
