Sindh province is an ancient land known as the “Cradle of Successive Civilizations” dating its history back to 7000BCE – the era when the Mehergarh settlement expanded westwards. It then gave rise to the highly developed society called the “Indus Valley Civilization” that existed between 3000 BC to 1500 BCE. The term “Sindh” is believed to have derived from a Sanskrit word “Sindhu” which essentially means “ocean, river or stream” referring primarily to “Indus River”. Sindh has some of the extraordinary tourist attractions and world heritage sites that reflect the rich history of the province.
Covering a total area of 140,914 km², the Sindh province is bordered by Balochistan province to the west, Punjab province to the north, the Indian states of Gujarat and Rajasthan to the east and southeast, and the Arabian Sea to the south. Karachi, the financial hub, the largest and most populated city is the provincial capital making the province the second-largest economy. Sindhi is the provincial language while English and Urdu are the official languages.
