Locally known as “Rohi”, the Cholistan Desert, located about 30 km from Bahawalpur, is a vast stretch of barren land covering an area of 26,300 km2 bordering the Thar Desert in Sindh which extends to India. The term Cholistan is derived from the Turkic word “Cho” which literally means desert where people live a semi-nomadic life moving from place to place with their livestock in search of food and water for themselves and animals. The lifestyle of the people of Cholistan is quite interesting. Isolated from the outside influence the culturally rich and self-subsistent people of Cholistan are very good at arts and crafts including textiles, camel products, leatherwork, and jewelry.
This exclusive tour follows most of the trail treaded by Sufi saints who came to the subcontinent from Persia, Afghanistan, and Central Asia to preach Islam and also introduced architecture which can be seen in most of the ancient buildings associated with Muslims faith in the form of schools, masjids, shrines, and forts. One of the objectives of this tour is the desert camel safari in the Cholistan around the marvelous 9th century Derawar Fort standing 30 m high in a 1500m circumference which speaks for itself.
