Kirthar National Park, established in 1974, spans 3,087 square kilometers and is nestled within the rugged Kirthar Mountain Range in Sindh. It is Pakistan’s second-largest national park, following Hingol National Park in Balochistan. Located about a three-hour drive from Karachi, the park is accessible by 4-wheel drive, offering an exciting experience for those who enjoy desert driving. With its dramatic landscapes and elevated vantage points, Kirthar is ideal for hiking and trekking, allowing visitors to explore its vast, scenic beauty.
The park is home to a variety of wildlife, though some species, such as wolves, Indian leopards, and striped hyenas, have become rare or extinct in the region. Today, visitors can still spot species like Chinkara gazelles, Sindh wild goats, urials, and badgers, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts. A particular highlight of the park is the enclosure for Blackbuck antelopes, part of ongoing conservation efforts to reintroduce this endangered species. The park’s diverse wildlife, coupled with its striking desert and mountain views, make it a unique and rewarding destination for eco-tourists.
For those planning a longer stay, the wildlife department offers rest houses within the park, and there are designated BBQ areas for picnics. However, visitors are advised to bring their own food and water, as the park’s remote location has limited facilities. Kirthar National Park is a hidden gem, offering not only rich biodiversity but also a sense of adventure and tranquility far removed from the busy life of Karachi.
