Klik and Minteka passes have long been viable passages between the Hunza valley in Pakistan and the Xinjiang province of China before the construction of the KKH over the Khunjerab pass. The Mintaka Pass was the primary passage used in ancient times. Due to the gradual advancement of glacial ice on Mintaka Pass, an alternate route through the nearby Klik Pass located some 30 km to the west, was used by caravans entering from China and Afghanistan. These passes have served as a safe passageway to traders and caravans for more than 1000 years and have long been part of the ancient silk route. The landscape making up this route is lush and rich in wildlife including ibex, wolf, bear, and marmot
